Quail
"We've got a point!" As you inch along slipping in behind the dogs with your gun ready in anticipation of the covey rise, the entire covey of 16 quail burst into the air together and stops your heart! There's so many it's hard to pick one out to shoot! Shotguns boom and two quail fall. To quail hunters, nothing is more exciting than the covey rise. Although you know it's coming, it startles you every time! The adrenaline rush from the flush and the intense shooting is indescribable to someone that has never experienced it.
Whether your goal is to create quail courses for added recreational opportunities or manage your property to improve native quail populations, Creating and maintaining quality habitat is the key when managing for quail. Key habitat requirements include nesting, brood-rearing, and escape cover, along with year around food availability. Quail habitat management techniques that promote these habitats are as diverse as the properties we manage, but often including burning, thinning timber, applications of selective herbicides, and plantings can be used.
