At Westervelt, our roots are tied to Quality Deer Management. Westervelt Wildlife Services not only helped trap and stock deer in Alabama in the late 1950’s, but was among the first to initiate the harvest of does and protect young bucks to enhance the quality of the deer herd on our lands in the 1960’s as populations became abundant. Through sound wildlife management strategies, the Westervelt lands became some of the finest hunting lands in Alabama, and still are today. With over 170 years of combined deer management experience, Westervelt’s staff of biologists provides deer management guidance to all of our hunting clubs to help achieve quality deer management goals.

Collecting, recording, and interpreting deer harvest data is vital to monitoring the success of our deer management program. For the most part, hunting clubs on Westervelt owned lands that are of adequate size are required to practice quality deer management. This means they are harvesting and adequate number of does to maintain desirable deer density that promote healthy herds, protecting bucks less than 3 years old, and maintaining quality food plots that provide high quality nutrition. Deer harvest data collected on these lands allow our biologists to monitor the quality of the deer herds and prescribe management recommendations to enhance them. Westervelt biologists work closely with our hunting clubs to provide deer management guidance. This assistance helps the clubs better manage the deer and make the most of their hunting leases. Nothing makes us happier than seeing pictures of mature bucks taken on our land and happy hunting lease customers.
