Does a day of outdoor fun with colleagues and friends at a destination location sound appealing? If so, join the Westervelt Wildlife Services team as it
hosts its 2nd annual fundraising Continental Pheasant Shoot benefiting Alabama Hunters Helping the
Hungry on Tuesday, February 23, 2010, at Westervelt
Lodge near Aliceville, Alabama.
Hunters Helping the Hungry is a program initiated by the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources Foundation. Meat processors across the state accept harvested deer donated by hunters, then provide ground venison to families in need through Alabama food banks. The cost to process the meat is $1 per pound. Since its inception in 1999, over 450,000 pounds of venison have been donated, and donated funds ensure the long-term viability of this valuable service. Last year WWS raised enough money to provide 4000 pounds of venison to families in need. Continental pheasant shoots are modeled after European driven style pheasant shoots, with barrel melting action. Hunters are stationed in 10 blinds surrounding a hidden tower. 300 birds are flighted as singles or doubles through the shooters, and blinds are rotated every 15 birds. Trained Labrador Retrievers collect every downed bird. This event consists of two 20-gun shoots: one morning session and one afternoon session. Refreshments are available during the shoot, and Westervelt Lodge’s famous fried chicken lunch will be served.
Participation is limited to 40 shooters. Early registration is recommended. Registration is $325 and includes participation in one 300-bird shoot, refreshments, lunch, door prizes, and cleaned and packaged birds to take home for the grill.
